The Chen Taichi Circle

The Montreal Chen Taichi Circle (CTCM) is a small group of instructors from various backgrounds who have all studied at the school Wudang Internal, founded in Montreal in 2001 by Master Yang Hai.

After close to 20 years of training under Master Yang, these martial art practitioners are looking to pass on their knowledge and passion for Tai Chi to a new generation of students.

The Montreal Chen Taichi Circle is an environment where practitioners can learn and practice this traditional internal style of Chinese martial art in a relaxed atmosphere that favors a spirit of exchange and self-improvement.

Philippe has been training in internal Chinese martial arts for over twenty years. Under Master Yang’s supervision, he refined his understanding of the movements of Chen style, and was able to recognize the fundamental principles housed within them.

His professional experiences as an acupuncturist and massage therapist allow him to appreciate the therapeutic potential of tai chi and to guide students, so that their practice is efficient while remaining safe.

Philippe Godbout

Carl's introduction to Taichi began from 1986 to 1989 at the Centre de tai chi Édouard-Roy in Montreal.

He returned to practice in 1998 at the Classical Martials Arts Canada school in Toronto. In addition to Yang style Taichi, he also practiced Bagua, push-hands, Chinese sword and Qi Gong. He obtained his certifications as associate instructor in 2001 and instructor in 2003. Carl taught to beginners until 2004 at Classical Martials Arts Canada and for the city of Toronto’s recreation program.

In 2004, Carl discovers Chen style Taichi at the Master Yang Hai’s Wudang Internal school. As a student he furthers his notions of push-hands and weapons training, including the sword (jian), saber, spear and halberd (guan dao). Over the years, he has taught beginners at Wudang Internal and currently continues to study under Yang Hai.

Carl Thériault

Olivier begun his martial art training in France, where he obtained a first dan in Aikibudo, a Japanese system of grappling and locks.

After relocating to Quebec, he begins training in Chinese styles with Cha Quan, an external “Long Fist” martial art which he goes to practice for 10 years.

Since 2012, he has studied Chen Taichi under Master Yang Hai. Olivier strives to incorporate concepts from his previous martial arts all while developing an expertise in his current internal art training.
